Building to Practise Awareness

Awareness refers to the state of being conscious and attentive to one's thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, and surroundings; while also being conscious of the one who is conscious! It is a full balancing act, like being an audience and the actor at the same time! Here are some techniques that can help you build on the practise of awareness:

  1. Body scan: A body scan involves paying attention to each part of your body, from your toes to the top of your head, and noticing any physical sensations or emotions.

  2. Sensory exploration: Pay attention to your senses, such as sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell, and notice the sensations they produce.

  3. Mindful breathing: Focusing on your breath and counting each inhale and exhale can help you stay present and cultivate awareness.

  4. Awareness: Awareness involves bringing your attention to the present moment without judgement. Practise awareness in everyday simple activities first such as walking, eating, or doing chores. Then take it to more complex activities like when talking to someone or experiencing strong emotions.

  5. Intention: Make a very strong intention that you remain aware. Keep reminding yourself to remain aware more and more until it becomes effortless.

It is important to remember that awareness takes time and practice to develop, and to be patient and persistent with your practice. Over time, awareness can help you become more in tune with your inner self, increase self-awareness, and lead to a more fulfilling, rewarding, peaceful and blissful life.
